Today I (Kait) realized that this is a much different environment to get used to not only because we are in a foreign country, but also because we are in a city. For some reason I never considered the city part as I prepared to live here, but that aspect plays an important role.
We learned some interesting things about our fair city today. The area of Florence in which we spend most of our time -- where our schools are located as well as where all of us students live -- is only a small part of the larger city of Florence. The whole city stretches about 15 miles but we live in the historical section aka Renaissance Italy !!!!!! So pretty much the hub of what you mostly want to see when you come. Which is nice because the entire area is quite walkable but the downside is that this place is constantly heavily flooded with tourists. This makes it hard to navigate between "tourist trap" and authentic Italian.
You may have noticed that I wrote "schools" plural above. As we got our class lists and school maps we discovered a new bit of information that we did not necessarily understand before. There are several small schools in different concentrations like, Culinary Arts, Fine Arts, Fashion Design, Business, etc. that make up an organization called Palazzi. So while we signed up through the Florence University of the Arts, we are taking some classes there, but we are also taking classes at the other schools. Apicius (Business, Culinary Arts, Hospitality), DIVA (Digital Imaging and Visual Arts), and Fast (Fashion Design), according to the classes we signed up for. Does that make sense?
More soon. And pictures!
Love Always,
Kait & Cody
